Chris Varga: Vichāra

Vichāra is an album of solo vibraphone explorations and improvisations, recorded by Chris Varga in February of 2023. An inveterate member of the Korean jazz scene since the early 2000’s, Chris moved from the States and was first active as a drummer, and then exclusively on vibraphone. Vichāra features Chris’ varied compositional approach in a series of 10 improvisations, each exploring a rich tapestry of sound and overtones with a particular mood.

Vichāra는 2023년 2월에 크리스 바가 (Chris Varga)가 녹음한 솔로 비브라폰 음악적인 탐구 및 즉흥 연주의 앨범입니다. 2000년대 초반부터 한국 재즈 씬의 노련한 멤버인 크리스는 먼저 미국에서 이주하여 드러머로 활동을 시작했고, 그 후 비브라폰에서만 활약하고 있습니다. Vichāra는 크리스의 다양한 작곡 접근법을 10개의 즉흥 연주를 통해 탐구하며, 각각이 특별한 분위기와 함께 풍부한 사운드와 고주파를 전합니다.

Leo Chang: Transference

Transference is an expression of memory and of generational healing. Shifting energies within relational dynamics is a constant reminder of the gift that is impermanence. Old does not need to imply rigid and new is often familiar—lofi and hifi coexist. Transference is overdue exchange and acceptance. Feeling, whether anew or renewed, a part of the family and the history. As such, belonging starts with transference. It begins with an invitation—to travel, to stay, to eat, to speak, to dance, to record, to play. Making time and room for some company.

This album offers three improvised solo tracks from Leo Chang’s self-made instrument VOCALNORI and piri. Each of these tracks captures Leo’s performance in single takes, with no edits. THEN 그때 and HABIT 버릇 were recorded in Seoul by Eugene SunJae Lee, while HEALTH 건강 was self-recorded in Troy NY at EMPAC.

“Transference,” 곧 “전이”란 뉴욕의 현대실험음악가 Leo Chang에게 기억과 세대 치유의 표현이며, 에너지의 전환과 불변성을 통한 소속감 형성의 초대입니다. 이 앨범은 Leo Chang이 만든 자작 악기 VOCALNORI와 전통악기 피리를 활용한 세 개의 즉흥연주 트랙을 담았습니다. 각 트랙은 라이브 연주를 싱글 테이크로 캡쳐하여 편집 없이 진행되었습니다. THEN 그때와 HABIT 버릇은 서울에서 Sunjae Lee에 의해 녹음되었으며, 반면 HEALTH 건강은 EMPAC의 Troy NY에서 자체 녹음되었습니다.

Massimo Magee, Dasom Baek, Taekjoon Kim: Turbulator

Turbulator features four improvised tracks from a leaderless trio and three solo contributions from its members: Massimo Magee (sopranino saxophone), Dasom Baek, (daegum), and Taekjoon Kim (flute, alto flute). The trio met for the first time on a summer afternoon, and without so much a handshake, set out to converse—to nod in agreement, voice objections, and negotiate everything in between. Documented here is a joyful intersection of colors that unfold in vivid, vibrant details.

Turbulator는 다채로운 음악적 배경에서 온 세 명의 합작으로, Massimo Magee의 소프라니노 색소폰, 백다솜의 대금, 김택준의 플루트가 어우러져 음색의 교차, 합일, 분산을 표현했다. 앨범의 제목 Turbulator는 층류와 난류의 경계를 원활하게 돕는 난류촉진기에서 영감을 받아, 즉흥음악의 과정에 비유했다. 유럽과 미국에서 활동중인 Massimo Magee는 색소폰뿐만 아니라 전자음향, 시각적 모듈을 활용한 실험연주를 선보이고 있다. 백다솜은 국악과 현대음악의 접점에서 보컬과 전자음을 활용한 새로운 소리의 가능성을 끊임없이 발굴해내고 있다. 플루티스트, 색소포니스트, 그리고 이 글의 저자인 김택준은 올해 콧수염을 길렀고 서울에서 활동중이며 지금 매우 쑥스럽다.

Gideok Moon: Alla Prima

밀란 쿤데라의 ‘참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움’에서 우리의 인생을 완성작이 없는 초안, 무용한 밑그림이라고 표현한 문장이 인상깊게 남았다. 이 문장이 오히려 인생에 있어서 모든 선택과 표현이 그림이라고 말하는 것 같았기 때문이다.

자신을 표현하는 일이 어렵다고 느낀 요즘, 밑그림 없이 단 한차례의 작업으로 그림을 완성시키는 Alla prima 기법과 플럭서스의 탈장르적, 다양한 예술간의 융합에서 영감을 받아, 인상깊은 문학 작품과, 글들을 보며 느끼는 감정과 생각을 드러머 문기덕이 첫 솔로앨범 ’Alla Prima’ 에서 즉흥연주로 풀어내고자 했다.

In Milan Kundera’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being,” I was deeply struck by a sentence that portrayed our lives as a draft without a finished work and a useless sketch. I felt like it seemed to say that all choices and expressions in life are paintings.

Feeling that expressing oneself is really difficult these days, I was Inspired by the fusion of Alla Prima technique of completing a painting with a single work without a sketch, as well as “decategorization” and various arts of Fluxus. I tried to improvise the feelings and thoughts of seeing impressive literary works and writings in my first solo album ‘Alla Prima’.

Sangbeom Kim: Entropy

Saxophonist and composer Sangbeom Kim’s first EP Album [Entropy] was inspired by the second law of thermodynamics, the law of entropy increase. On this album, he shows inevitable contradictions and sufferings we encounter, since we are an imperfect human being. Joonseok Yang on bass, Eunmaru Yi on drums.

색소포니스트이자 작곡가 김상범의 첫 리더 앨범인 [Entropy]는 열역학 제2법칙인 ‘엔트로피 증가의 법칙’에서 영감을 받았으며, 태생적 결함을 지닌 불완전한 인간들이 겪게 되는 필연적 고난과 모순들을 이은마루(드럼), 양준석(베이스)과 함께 그 만의 방식으로 해석하여 선보인다.

Michael Bisio: Inimitable

Zach Hahn: Particles and Forces

Seoul-based Guitarist, professor, musical philosopher Zach Hahn is one of the first childhood teachers of Mung Music Label’s founder Sunjae Lee, and in this album, he explores standard jazz tunes in a highly adventurous and deconstructed/reconstructed approach with nods to ideas in physics and philosophy. The stripped down intervallic angular melodies are foils for oceanic improvisations in both solo (Particles and Forces Suite, based on Body and Soul) and duo settings, accompanied by drummer Doheon Lee in the latter half of the album.

Veranda Trio: 19

Veranda Trio is a guitar / bass / drums trio that has been notable in that they have been one of the groups in the free improvisation scene here in Korea that consistently played for years, steadily expanding their repertoire of originals which drew as much from rock music as it did from free improvisation and jazz. This second album expresses various aspects of the struggle that we all went through in the era of Covid-19, thus titled “19”.

이번 앨범에는 작년부터 우리가 경험하고 있는 Covid-19 바이러스에 대한 곡들로 이루어져 있습니다. 우리는 분리 되었고 우리의 삶은 또 다른 형태로 연결 되었습니다. 그 가운데 제가 느꼈던 감정들과 형태들을 곡으로 담았습니다. 현재 우리의 삶에서 진행 되고 있는 주제로서 듣는 재미와 본인의 코로나에 대한 정의, 또한 나름의 결론과 의미를 생각해볼수 있는 시간이 됩니다.

Youngwoo Lee / Eunmaru Yi: Orbit

Youngwoo Lee and Eunmaru Yi’s duo project “ORBIT” chronicles a new intersection between two likeminded musicians coming from different trajectories; pianist Youngwoo Lee, highly active in the Dutch/European scene before coming back to Korea, and drummer Eunmaru Yi (formerly Seungjun Yi), one of the up and coming drummers from within Korea’s jazz and free improv scene. A combination of original compositions and improvisations, the album demonstrates their immediate chemistry and shared emphasis on lyricism even during abstraction.

이영우와 이은마루의 새로운 듀오 프로젝트“ORBIT”은 서로 다른 길을 걸어온, 비슷한 색을 가진 두 뮤지션 사이의 새로운 교차점을 기록합니다. 네덜란드/유럽 재즈신에서 활발히 활약한 피아니스트 이영우와 한국의 재즈신과 프리 즉흥 연주신에서 역량을 드러내고있는 드러머 이은마루(이승준)는 이번 앨범에서 독창적인 오리지널 곡들과 즉흥 연주들로 그들의 호흡을 추상적이면서도 동시에 서정적으로 풀어냅니다.

Sunjae Lee / Junyoung Song: Claustrophobia

Claustrophobia is the debut album from saxophonist Sunjae Lee and drummer Junyoung Song, two close musical colleagues that have been playing together for 6 years in both duo format as well as part of many other configurations. These 6 new original compositions are dedicated to the collective ethos and angst of the year 2020 and capture the diverse range of expression that the duo plays within, transversing genre idioms while maintaining the focus on their specialty- a highly dynamic improvisatory style that prioritizes melodic interplay and longer form structure.

Claustrophobia(폐소공포증)은 색소포니스트 이선재와 드러머 송준영의 첫 번째 듀오 앨범입니다. 두 사람은 가까운 음악 동료로서 듀오 형식뿐만 아니라 트리오부터 퀸텟의 다양한 구성으로 6년 동안 함께 연주해왔습니다. 앨범 안에 담긴 6개의 새로운 자작곡들은 2020년에 보인 집단의 정신과 불안감에 헌정됩니다. 그리고 이 앨범은 긴 형식 안에서 듀오의 멜로디 상호 작용을 우선시하는 역동적, 즉흥적 요소에 초점을 유지하면서, 동시에 여러 장르를 뛰어넘어 연주하는 표현들을 포착합니다.

Ji Park / Pyo Jinho: Black Cosmos

Black Cosmos is the duo improvisation project of cellist Ji Park and vocalist Pyo Jinho, two multidisciplinary artists that have been active on the Korean creative music scene for years. Ji Park has been prolific in many art circles around Seoul, recently being chosen for the Incheon Art Platform residency in 2019, and often combines her cello improvisations with visual performances in the form of dancers or video-art. Pyo Jinho is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, performing widely on both clarinet and vocals, arriving back in Korea in 2010 after having studied at University D’Evry and Saint-Maur Conservatory in France. The two met in early 2019 and began a duo project focusing on free improvisation, and this album is the first official recording that they have made together.

Black Cosmos는 한국 현대음악 씬에서 활발히 활동하고 있는 첼리스트 지박과 보컬리스트 표진호의 즉흥듀오 프로젝트이다. 지박은 인천아트플랫폼(2019-2021)과 뉴욕 OMI International Arts Center(2015)의 레지던시 아티스트로 선정되었고 현대무용과 비디오아트 등의 구성으로 지박컨템포러리시리즈를 꾸준히 발표하고 있다. 표진호는 아주 뛰어난 기량의 클라리네티스트이자 보컬리스트로써, 프랑스 University D’Evry 와 Saint-Maur Conservatory에서 수학후 2010년 귀국한 이후 현재까지 재즈, 프리재즈 씬에서 활발한 활동을 하고 있다. 두 연주자는 오랜시간 Free Improvisation을 기반으로 다양한 다원예술 프로젝트로 협연하였고, 2021년 첫 듀오음반을 발매한다.

Jeremy Noller: Passage

Jeremy Noller is a new face in the Korean jazz scene, arriving in 2019 after spending nearly two decades as a sought after drummer in the New York jazz scene. Originally from Libertyville, IL, Jeremy completed a Master’s degree at Manhattan School of Music and was one of the few selected for the Artist Diploma program at Juilliard in 2011. Although his albums as a leader, Music Notes (2010) and Noller/Sylla (2019) were both focused on the synthesis of modern jazz and West African rhythms, his musical pursuits were eclectic and ranged across many genres. In this outing, Noller is joined by one of the project groups that formed early on after his arrival to Seoul; guitarist Dongil Han, bassist Jaekon Jeon, and saxophonist Sunjae Lee, and the original compositions highlight the breadth of his previous experience while also providing a passage to new territory- a more open and improvised approach which was captured in the course of 3 hours without any editing and minimal post production.

Jeremy Noller는 거의 20년간 뉴욕 재즈계에서 활동하다가 2019년에 한국에 도착한 한국 재즈계의 새로운 얼굴이다. 맨해튼 음악대학에서 석사학위를 마치고 2011년 줄리아드 음대의 최고 연주자 과정에 선정된 몇 안 되는 사람들 중 한 명이다. 그의 리더작 Music Notes(2010)와 Noller/Sylla(2019)에서 모던한 재즈와 서아프리카의 리듬을 조합하는 데 초점을 맞추었고, 다양한 장르에 걸쳐서 음악을 추구했다. 이번 음반 작업에서 일찌감치 서울에서 결성된 프로젝트 그룹 (기타리스트 한동일, 베이시스트 전제곤, 색소포니스트 이선재)와 함께 하였다. 그의 작곡은 이전 경험의 폭을 넓히는 동시에 보다 개방적이고 즉흥적인 접근 방식으로 새로운 영역을 개척하였다. 3시간 동안 진행된 녹음에 편집 없이 고스란히 담겨있다.

Daniel Ko / Soojin Suh: Alchemy

Alchemy is the duo project of longtime musical collaborators saxophonist Daniel Ko and drummer Soojin Suh. Typically playing in more conventional jazz settings, this album focuses more on free improvisation, sometimes using some folk and religious melodies as foils before launching into rapturous solos that are reminiscent of the drum and saxophone duos from the classic late 60’s free jazz era.

‘Alchemy’ 는 고단열과 서수진의 듀오 연주 앨범으로 오랫동안 함께 연주해온 두 연주자의 호흡이 극적으로 발현된 앨범이다. 두 연주자 모두 재즈 백그라운드를 가지고 있지만, 이들의 연주에서는 단일 장르로 단정할 수 없는 복합적인 문화의 색이 느껴진다. 60년대 프리재즈에 대한 애착이 느껴지는 즉흥 연주 위에 민속 음악을 연주하거나 종교적인 주제를 표현할 때에도 두 사람이 가진 고유한 개성은 주제를 포용하는 넉넉함을 보여준다. 탁월한 멜로디 메이커인 고단열과 어떤 프리 연주에서도 형식미를 강조하는 서수진의 연주의 조화는 한순간도 그냥 버려지지 않고 살아난다. 어떻게 보면 2020년의 프리음악은 이렇게 진화했다고 말하는 듯하다. 강렬하고도 아름다운 두 사람의 콜라보가 만들어낸 순간이 들려주는 것은 바로 꾸밈 하나 없는 그들 자신이다.

Sungho Choi / Junyoung Song: Carbon

Carbon is the duo project of guitarist Sungho Choi and drummer Junyoung Song, two mainstays in the improvised music scene in Seoul, Korea. First performing as a duo in early 2020, this record is the culmination of months of weekly improvisation sessions since then. Exploring varied textural landscapes through 7 tracks, the duo’s debut record showcases their deep rapport and a shared compositional approach to free improvisation.

Carbon 은 한국(서울) 즉흥음악 씬에서 활발히 활동하고 있는 두 뮤지션, 기타리스트 최성호와 드러머 송준영의 듀오 프로젝트다. 두 사람은 2020년 초에 첫 연주를 하였고, 그 후 이어졌던 몇 달 간의 정기적인 즉흥연주 세션은 이번 앨범으로 결실을 맺게 되었다. 두 연주자의 깊은 교감 속에서 직조해낸 음악을 보여주는 이 듀오의 데뷔 앨범에는 다양한 질감의 영역을 탐색해나간 7개의 수록곡을 담고 있다.

Taekjoon Kim: Echo Chamber

Echo Chamber is the debut album of Taekjoon Kim, a Korean-American flutist from Boston, Massachusetts. After studying with Joe Morris and Anthony Coleman in New England Conservatory’s Contemporary Improvisation Masters program, he moved to Seoul, Korea, in 2015 and continues to be active in its nascent underground jazz scene. Informed by modes and languages long claimed by free jazz saxophonists, Taekjoon Kim weaves intense minimalist structures, in a series of meditations on the role of echoes in music, society, and self.

“Echo Chamber”는 보스턴에서 자유즉흥연주의 거장 Joe Morris와 Anthony Coleman의 지도아래 비범한 소리의 미학의 연구자로 거듭난 플루티스트 김택준의 첫 솔로 앨범이다. 울림(echo)에서 비롯되는 공존과 마찰, 그리고 그 안의 주체를 탐구하는 여섯 번의 명상을 담아냈다. 색채의 엇갈림이 희미해지기도, 뚜렷해지기도 하지만 긴장의 고조와 해소를 통한 카타르시스보다 음율의 반복과 소멸을 통해 “있는 그대로 지속될 수 있는” 가능성을 표현하려고 노력했다.

Eunhye Jeong / Minki Cho: Abyss

Abyss is the duo improvisational collaboration of Boston based pianist Eunhye Jeong and Korea based upright bassist Minki Cho. First performing together in 2020 for an album release concert of Eunhye’s previous album, “Chi-Da”, the duo had a instantly formed rapport and shared a love of free improvisation. This album is a further exploration of their duo work, entirely improvised and going into “the abyss”, letting the subconscious dictate the textures that arose, equally placid and terrifying.

Abyss는 미국 보스턴에서 활동 중인 피아니스트 정은혜와 한국에서 활동 중인 업라이트 베이시스트 조민기의 듀오 즉흥 연주이다. 정은혜의 이전 앨범 ‘치다’의 앨범 발매 콘서트를 위해 2020년 초 함께 첫 공연을 펼친 듀오는 순식간에 음악적 친밀감을 형성하고 자유 즉흥 연주에 대한 깊은 공감을 나누었다. 이 앨범은 그들의 듀오 작업에 대한 추가적인 탐구로서, 완전한 즉흥을 통해 “심연”으로 들어가 무의식이 이끌어 평온함과 위협적인 기세가 동시에 담긴 다양한 음악적 질감을 표현해냈다.

Baum Sae: Embrace

Baum Sae is a collaborative project between drummer Soojin Suh, traditional vocalist Borim Kim, frequent collaborators in the acclaimed Near East Quartet group, combined with Gina Hwang on Geomungo, a traditional Korean plucked instrument. Together they formed a new project “Baum Sae” (translation: Night Birds) in 2020, combining traditional Korean musical elements with group improvisations and original compositions.

김보림, 서수진, 황진아 세사람의 창작음악 프로젝트이다. 모든것이 연결된 시대를 살아가는 젊은 창작가들이 ’차이의 공존’을 목표로 소리를 다시 쓴다. 더 열심히 포용하지 않으면 각자의 거대한 자아는 폭력이 되고 어설픈 융합만이 남는다. 세 사람의 세계, 세 사람의 소리는 포용함으로 공존의 미학을 완성한다.

Eunyoung Kim: Earworm

Eunyoung Kim studied classical violin and piano from an early age and discovered a talent for jazz piano at 18 years old, attending Dongduk University in Korea. In 2007 she studied at Berklee School of Music Undergrad program and subsequently got a scholarship to attend the New England Conservatory’s Masters Degree program.

Returning to Korea in 2013, she set forth upon her musical career, playing with the Three Quartet’s “Road to Home” and Sungjae Son’s Trio albums, while staying active as a leader and writing her original music. In 2018 she released her debut album, “Silent Child”, an album of original compositions, and was featured on the Korean TV show EBS Space (www.youtube.com/watch) the following year.

Eunyoung Kim has always been a skilled free improviser and in 2020, she released a purely improvised performance with saxophonist Sunjae Lee and NYC based drummer Dayeon Seok, “Pulse Theory” released under Ghettoalive records. This album “Earworm” displays even further Eunyoung’s improvisational prowess and passion and was recorded spontaneously in the course of a couple hours in July of 2020.

피아니스트 김은영의 첫 솔로 앨범

한 시간 남짓 이어진 자유 즉흥 연주가 11개의 주제로 나뉘어 담겼다. 즉흥적 구조의 형성과 해체, 그만의 독특한 감각으로 이야기를 풀어내는 방식이 돋보인다. 앨범 전반에 걸쳐 표현된 어그러진 리듬과 낯선 화성 흐름 속에서 블루스와 선명한 멜로디 조각들이 떠다닌다. 귓가에 쌓인 조각들이 그칠 줄 모르는 선율로 자리잡음을 표현한 [Earworm]은 2020년 7월에 녹음되었다.

Saaamkiiim: Ma-Chal

SaaamKiiim (formerly known as Sonor Project) is a trio for electroacoustic improvisation comprised of haegeum (Yeji Kim), electronics (Dey Kim), and percussions (Sun Ki Kim). They aim to break down the three components of music — harmony, melody, and rhythm. These dissected sounds are reinterpreted and recombined to be performed as natural phenomenons. In addition, their music resembles the relationships in our society and strives to resonate with the specific story of each one of the audiences.

삼킴 SaaamKiiim은 해금(김예지), 일렉트로닉스(Dey Kim), 타악기(김선기)로 구성된 일렉트로어쿠스틱 즉흥음악 트리오이다. 2019년 3월에 실험을 위한 프로젝트(소노프로젝트 Sonor Project)로 결성되어 5회의 공연을 거친 후 2020년 삼킴 SaaamKiiim으로 탈바꿈했다. 그들은 음악의 세 가지 요소인 화성, 선율, 박자를 해체한다. 이렇게 해체된 소리 파편의 변형과 중첩을 통해 다양한 자연현상으로 연주한다. 또한, 그들의 음악은 자기의 소리를 내고, 어떤 소리에 함께 울리는, 우리네 사회 속 관계와 맞닿아 있다. 관계 속에서 개인의 주체성이 겪는 자각, 변화, 아픔, 치유에 관한 보편적인 경험을 음악으로 풀어내고, 이 보편성이 공연에 함께 하는 청중 한 명 한 명의 특수한 이야기로 공명되고자 한다. 무엇을 입에 넣어 목구멍으로 넘기는 행위. 웃음, 눈물, 소리 따위를 억지로 참는 행위. 이러한 행위를 미분한 모든 순간을 삼키고 소화하듯, 같은 성을 가진 세 명의 삼킴 역시 각자의 악기로 수많은 소리를 삼키고 내뱉으며 관객들과 삼킴의 의미를 소통하려 한다.

Choi Sun Bae Trio: Palindrome

Choi Sun Bae is one of Korea’s 1st generation jazz musicians, being active in the Korean scene for over 50 years, and has the distinction of being one of Korea’s only free jazz improvising masters. Although Choi was quite active in the Korean free improv starting from the 1970’s, in recent years he has mainly performed and recorded this type of music during trips to Japan, while sticking to his other specialty, traditional jazz, in Korea.

Upon invitation from Korea’s foremost experimental arts venue, Ghetto Alive, Choi performed a solo improvised concert in June of 2020 and since then has re-connected to the current improvising circles of musicians and audience members centered around that venue. This recording represents the first of many recordings and performances of Choi’s new trio and his recent reentry into the Korean experimental music scene.
